CODE OF CONDUCT

At Compassion House, we expect all staff to guide, nurture, and empower the young women in our care, helping them grow spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally throughout their journey here. All of these young women are minors who may have experienced significant trauma in their past, so it is essential to approach their care with sensitivity and respect. Below are key considerations to ensure a positive, supportive environment.

Promote Safety, Wellbeing, & Growth (Spiritual, Emotional, Mental, & Physical)

Physical Contact: Boundaries are crucial for the safety and wellbeing of our residents and yourself. Many of our residents have experienced some form of abuse and may struggle with establishing healthy boundaries. It is important to understand that some residents may not be comfortable with physical touch, while others may be more open to it.

  • Always ask permission before offering physical contact (e.g., hugs, high fives).

  • Respect their boundaries if they decline.

Be Trustworthy and Responsible

Consistency & Reliability: Your role requires awareness of your responsibilities, which fosters trust with the young women you work with. Consistent and reliable behavior leads to more positive outcomes for the youth participants and strengthens relationships.

  • Honesty, keeping promises, and maintaining trust are foundational to effective mentoring.

  • Ensure you meet commitments and avoid creating false expectations. Even minor disappointments can impact trust.

Act with Integrity

Be Thoughtful and Respectful: Your actions and conduct should reflect integrity and respect for the values of Compassion House.

  • Refrain from actions or language that are contrary to our Christ-centered mission (e.g., cursing, alcohol use, tobacco, or weapons).

  • Be cautious about discussing sensitive topics like pregnancy options (e.g., abortion or adoption). If a resident expresses these concerns, inform a director so appropriate resources can be provided.

  • Always act in a way that supports the dignity of each resident and their unique situation.

Your Role

  • Avoid forming personal relationships with residents that could compromise your ability to work effectively or might harm or exploit them.

  • Be mindful of boundaries with professionals already involved in the resident's life, such as tutors, therapists, or probation officers. If a concern arises, suggest that the resident speak with the appropriate professional.

In all situations, we ask that you use common sense, always keeping our mission statement in mind, and adhere to the ethical standards set forth by Compassion House. Together, we can create a safe, supportive, and healing environment for all residents.
